 2010-11 Gay Straight Alliance

The Gay Straight Alliance meets on Wednesdays after school. We celebrate and promote diversity, tolerance and acceptance in our school. We believe that everyone has the right to be who they are, and that everyone has the right to love who they love, and we work to make Squalicum a more accepting, safe place. We will organize an Ally Day, to celebrate those who do not necessarily identify within the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender & questioning community but accept and care for those who do; and the Day of Silence—a national day when people are silent for the day to echo the silence of those who cannot express themselves for fear of getting attacked or harassed for being who they are. We also discuss similarities people share regardless of how they identify, and where prejudice and hate come from in our society. We examine why there are people who refuse to tolerate others who are different from them, and we work to break down these biases within our own individual understanding, in order to promote healthier, stronger connections within our school community.
